A Must See Extravaganza: Haus Of Yolo Review

What do you get when a circus, a fashion show, and a comedy gig walk into a bar? I recount my wild night at the Dust Palace's "Haus of Yolo"

I had tried to research what I was in for. Although with every google and every attempt to prepare myself I wound up more confused. Aerial? Circus? Cabaret? On stage sewing? The results left me baffled, but overflowing with anticipation.

Upon entering those double doors of “The Dust Palace” performing arts centre, I was horrified to find out that my party was seated ON THE STAGE. This terror was quickly diffused as soon as the show started and I realised that this was not a traditional performance. Using the space from stage to floor, and in between audience members, the four performers captured the room’s attention.

The performance told the story of the creation of a humorous, fictional, yet fabulous fashion design house called “Haus of Yolo”. Amongst the chaos of the live onstage sewing there was incredible acrobatics, aerial performance, and walking on glass (painful watch). As the clothes are made onstage, much of the performance was slightly birthday-suit-core (hence the R18 rating).

Now, sitting on the stage horrified me at first, because I'd rather die than be picked for audience interaction. Luckily, I evaded being chosen. Although, even if I had been, it wouldn’t have been bad at all, because of the fun yet unserious approach the performers took to audience involvement. It was evident they always wanted the volunteers to feel comfortable, yet without breaking their wacky persona’s.

With one liners like “bondage is perfect to get you into the creative flow” Haus of Yolo was the perfect balance between comedic gold, awe inspiring talent, and jaw dropping acrobatics.

I got to chat with one of the performers afterwards who said they loved “the queer joy of [the show], getting to do my favourite thing on stage with all of my best friends. And just being campy and fun”. That truly sums up my experience exactly: campy and fun. Haus of Yolo is a must see for anyone wanting some unforgettable entertainment.
