This year's Art in the Park exhibition happened last weekend at Eden Park showcasing some of Aotearoa's most talented and emerging commercial fine artists. Overall it makes a really enjoyable afternoon activity and I reccomend marking your calendar for Art in the Park 2026.

For those uninitated Art in the Park is a bit like Armageddon Expo or a ZineFest but for fine art, where consumers pay a small fee to get a chance to visit the stalls and buy stuff (if you can afford a property in the Double-Grammar Zone that is), with a few free activities along the way (such as a workshop provided by Art Escape NZ).

What makes Art in the Park worth the cost of entry is the fact you can meet the artists (like New Blood Pop) and they're eager to discuss the philosophy and tecniques behind their work. Even if you don't care about art at all, its worth the price of admission just to walk on the hallowed pitch of Eden Park. My personal highlight was the sculptural works by Christian Nicholson which were situated all around the grounds and included pop culture refrences, nudists, Kiwi icons and even a herd of cute doggies.

Oh, and the event (and Eden Park itself) was sponsored by Waipapa Taumata Rau, so your Student Fees helped fund it and I spotted Dawn Freshwater walking around at the opening night. Interesting they can afford to fund a huge event and sports arena but can't afford to properly fund their student magazine anymore.
