Targeted Recruitment on Campus: Do You Feel Their Presence?
Students at UOA City Campus have been reporting targeted recruitment from religious groups. AUSA has heard the issues and posted how to identify red flags when being approached, and Campus Security can support any issues that occur.

Reports of students being targeted by religious groups have been a main concern of AUSA and university security over the past two months. Students have been finding themselves targeted by what they describe as manipulative tactics of recruitment when they are alone or on campus in the evenings. While official reports to Campus Security have become more common, students have shared that they have had experiences of these groups as early as summer school.
AUSA posted on their Instagram page on 10 March 2025 an announcement showing they are aware of this as an issue. The post also has some information about red flags to look for when being targeted for recruitment or if you are involved with a new group already. Some of these points to look for are: is the group quick to criticise and belittle other religions or beliefs? Are they insistent on getting your contact details? Do you feel you are being isolated from friends and family? Do you feel pressure to undergo a commitment ritual soon after joining? The post states that, “AUSA respects the legal right of everyone to peacefully hold and practice their own religious beliefs. But we also believe that people should be free from unwanted pressure and manipulation in a secular institution like the University.”
Campus Security met with the AUSA Council to explain their process of dealing with groups that are recruiting students. First, they identify if the group is university affiliated. If not, they cannot be on campus and must move to a public area. Public areas refer to the streets, a place I’m sure you’re familiar with. If yes, they cannot be removed from campus but are reminded of the student conduct. Campus Security do not have the ability to forcibly remove groups from campus, and if the issue escalates, they will involve the police.
With students returning to campus under daylight-savings hours, concerns have been voiced about being around when it gets darker. Current recommendations are to stay with those you trust and get in contact with Campus Security if you find yourself in a situation.
